As the years pass, it becomes more and more apparent to me just how important The Haifa Center is for the children who come here. It is most heartwarming to see them develop in so many spheres. We see improvement in every aspect of their lives, not only school performance, but also in their social skills, general behavior and emotional well being. To see children who start off developmentally challenged, succeed, is very exiting. To see them realizing their potential is very gratifying. When children are helped, parents too benefit and ultimately the entire society enjoys the outcomes. The Haifa Center has brought light into the lives of hundreds of families, but there are still many children who we would like to reach. Our message is one of hope! Thank you for being our partners in bringing the light into the lives of so many children.
Happy Chanukah!

Pediatric Cancer Survivors

The need to provide didactic and emotional treatments for pediatric cancer survivors came to our attention following a one day seminar held at the Haifa Center. The seminar focused on Snoezelen Room treatment for children, who have survived this life threatening illness. The Snoezelen Room – a multi-sensory setting, is usually used by our staff for treating victims of trauma.

The "Snoezi Model" was presented to us by Ms. Maskit Schochat, School Principal at Schneider Children's Medical Center and who runs their Snoezelen Room. This approach is used successfully with children suffering from Cancer and

other debilitating diseases and addresses the problem of trauma that affects children and their families when coping with life threatening situations. Children have to endure severe, ongoing pain, the invasion of their privacy, loss of control over their body and the fear of death. Learning difficulties also play a role with children returning to school after long absences.

We plan to base our project on the "Snoezi Model" at Schneider Children's Medical Center, using our many years of experience dealing with trauma, to build a specialized program for children surviving Cancer.

Children will be referred to our center by social workers working in the Oncology Departments at Rambam and Bnei Zion Hospitals. Our staff will receive professional supervision and training from Schneider Hospital experts.

Prof. Zvi Izikowitz, of the Faculty of Social Work at the Haifa University and head of the Center of Social Research, visited our center in order to get to know the nature of our work and to pave the way for joint research projects between our center and the Haifa University.

Mr. Danny Pessler, Principal of Leo Baeck Education Center and President of Haifa Rotary Organisation, visited The Haifa Center. He was very impressed by the new projects on our agenda and plans to report back to Rotary club members.

Workshop for Staff

A one day professional seminar on the subject of Neuromotor Development by expert, Edna Gilboa proved to be an informative and exiting experience for our staff.

A View from Close-up

One of our children, a young Russian immigrant, with a severe language delay, spent two years in our special ed kindergarten. He was then assessed and found ready for Grade 1 in a regular class! It should be noted that in Russia he was considered mentally retarded.

In view of past requests, we are offering the opportunity to dedicate a project, a treatment room or equipment in memory of a close relative.
