LD Program & Expressive Therapies for youngsters with learning, behavioral and emotional difficulties

One out of ten children suffers from learning disabilities, with some specialists claiming that the number is even higher, affecting 15% of the population. Children who don’t succeed at school tend to develop emotional problems and behavioral difficulties. The Haifa Center for Chi.L.D. has adopted a holistic approach to the total child, viewing each child as a "world unto himself". Children are referred to the Center in a number of ways: by school and kindergarten teachers, by local doctors and health services, through the Psychology Department of the Municipality, and through word of mouth in the local community. Once a child is referred to the Haifa Center or brought on the initiative of his parents, the staff will assess him to ascertain areas of difficulty.

A multi-disciplinary team of more than 20 therapists and teaching specialists designs a unique program for each child, choosing from the Center's wealth of therapeutic tools, which include:

• Remedial (didactic) teaching: reading, writing, math

• Paramedical Treatments: Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy

• Expressive Therapies:
  1. Art Therapy
2. Drama Therapy
3. Music Therapy
4. Animal Assisted Therapy (Pet Therapy)
5. Snoezelen Room Therapy (also used for treating of war trauma victims)
6. Gardening Therapy

• Dynamic Group Therapy for Social Skills
Children with learning disabilities do not develop social skills naturally. They often misinterpret social cues, and are themselves misunderstood by parents, teachers and peers. We run group workshops for children at our Center to enhance their social skills, which are taught in an innovative and fun setting. Results have been dramatic!

• Group Therapy to enhance Learning Skills
Children with learning disabilities sometimes lack necessary strategies to help them succeed in their learning. These children are taught vital learning skills, in small groups, to help them succeed in their studies at school, when doing homework, and when learning for exams.

• Family Counseling
Helping children is not enough, we provide parental guidance and family counseling services to help families cope with daily difficulties. Co-operation between our staff and parents can do much to empower families.

The Center today has ~240 youngsters, ages 4 – 18, mostly from large families with low incomes. Many of the children need multiple treatments. The advantage for children who learn at the Haifa Center is that a variety of treatments are available under one roof, with co-operation between the various therapists. Parents save valuable time and energy not having to take their children to different locations for different treatments. Early assessment and intervention can do much to prevent the escalation of problems. The overall aim is to enable children to overcome their difficulties, reach their full potential and become contributing citizens in Israeli society.
